Pike County Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Committee Host PEEC Event for Pike County Teens!
The Pike County Chamber of Commerce (PCCC) Women in Business Committee hosted an event for Pike County teens at the Pocono Environmental Education Center on Saturday September 22, 2018.
“We wanted to create a Teen/Mentor Team Building Experience which will be the first in a series of similar Junior Leadership Academy events. Our hope is to hold them at different hosting locations and include teen girls from the Pike County school districts”, said Jessica Black, Pike County Chamber of Commerce Vice President and Women in Business Committee Chair.
The program was offered to ten girls who were chosen to take part based on their submission as to why they would like to participate in this Teen/Mentor Team Building Experience. Each student was paired with a mentor for the day. The group hiked into the woods to locate the obstacles they were going to face, and one by one, in some cases two by two, completed the morning course.
During lunch Fausta Phelan, a Certified Professional Coach, provided a few Leadership Tools and Tips. She spoke about leadership as it pertains to young women with emphasis on confidence. After lunch it was back out to the woods for the second half of the obstacle course. One of the mentors, Nicole Hammer of Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, stated, “I’m not sure if we were mentoring the girls or they were mentoring us as they were all so smart and wise beyond their years. Such a beautiful group of girls both inside and out.”.
The Women in Business Committee couldn’t have held this program without the help of the volunteers, mentors and staff of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce along with the generous support from: Jim Gifford Paving And Trucking (our largest sponsorship), Wayne Bank, Paul Brislin EA, Fausta A. Phelan CPC & ELI-MP, Wayne Memorial Hospital, Affordable Inspections, Roaringbrook Abstract, Safe Haven, Dye Hard Salon, Tamara Chant, Green Trees Learning Center, Jo Ann and Robert Laplace, Ann G. Seman, Beauty Creations Salon and Spa, Lacquer Nails, Pike County Public Library, Kelly A. Gaughan Esq., Lackawanna College, Ski Big Bear, Costa’s Family Fun Park, Lori Phillips, The Dime Bank, Jenn Murphy Fitness, Bekirov Disposal, Tine’s Captured Moments, and PEEC.
“We firmly believe that developing future leaders is a fundamental function of an effective Chamber of Commerce and we’re very excited that our Women in Business committee organized this mentoring program”, said Derek Bellinger, President, Pike County Chamber of Commerce. “We aspire to develop community leaders and we also appreciate the generous donations from the many businesses who helped make this event possible and, in particular, wanted to thank Jim Gifford Paving And Trucking who made a very substantial contribution that nearly covered the entire cost of the event”.
