WMH Auxiliary Ball Highlights Centennial & Roaring Twenties

Wayne Memorial Hospital saw its birth in 1920, the beginning of a heady decade – flappers in short skirts, the Jazz Age, the Charleston, the cake walk and great wealth (until the stock market crash of ’29). The Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is kicking off the hospital’s centennial with a “Roaring Twenties” theme at its annual Mistletoe Ball on January 18, 2020 at Silver Birches in Tafton..
“Everyone is invited and encouraged to don the dress of the times,” said Melissa Rickard, co-chair of this year’s gala. “It’s the Auxiliary’s biggest fundraiser of the year and we look forward to raising money while having a lot of fun.”
This year’s Mistletoe will offer music and dancing, as it has traditionally but the meal will be a buffet instead of a sit-down, waiter-served meal.
“Attendees will have more choices,” said Rickard, “just like in healthcare!”
The event will benefit the hospital’s current fundraising campaign, The Second Century Fund. Monies will go towards physician recruitment, state-of-the-art medical equipment and the latest in informational technology.
Rickard and Co-chair Marianne McConeghy noted that the recent completion of the hospital’s new patient tower made this a perfect time to raise money for these items.
“The new tower has 50 private rooms and ‘smart technology,’” said Rickard. “The Second Century Fund will complement the effort by supporting the best medical talent and technology possible for a bright future.”
The Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, which counts close to 200 members, raises money for the non-profit community hospital with events throughout the year, as well as its second-hand shops The Other Shop and The Other Shop Two in Honesdale and Hawley.
Tickets are $85 per person and can be purchased by calling Joan at (570) 226 – 9750.
